New Route Adds Further Momentum to Hokkaido’s Growing International Access
United Airlines has announced a new seasonal nonstop service between San Francisco and Sapporo, marking the first direct route between the continental United States and Hokkaido.
According to the airline, the new service will operate three times weekly between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and New Chitose Airport (CTS) from December 11, 2026 through March 2027. Flights are expected to operate on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
The announcement adds to a growing list of international route expansions into Hokkaido, following recent developments including Air Canada’s planned Vancouver–Sapporo service and expanded Australian interest in direct access to northern Japan.
For alpine destinations such as Niseko and Furano, increasing international connectivity continues to reinforce broader tourism demand trends. Direct long-haul access has become an increasingly important factor for premium travellers and ski visitors looking to reduce transit complexity when travelling to Hokkaido.
United stated that the route will connect travellers from nearly 80 US cities into Sapporo via its San Francisco hub, further expanding North American access into Japan’s northern ski regions.
The airline also noted that it carried more than 1.8 million passengers between the United States and Japan in 2025, more than all other US carriers combined.
For Hokkaido’s resort property markets, continued airline expansion is closely watched as a broader signal of long-term international demand, tourism confidence, and the ongoing maturation of the region as a global alpine destination.
